Axim + V600 + T-Mobile = Internet Anywhere!
After days of pulling out what’s left of my hair, I have finally managed to get my new Dell Axim X50v online using Bluetooth, my Motorola V600, and T-Mobile’s Unlimited Internet. I am now able to surf the ‘Net, check my Gmail, and Instant Message while sitting virtually anywhere that T-Mobile has coverage.

All the forums and discussions I’ve read made it sound so simple… just program in your dial-up number as *99#! Right. And when that didn’t work, it was suggested that I try *99***1#, or some other obscure sequences of digits.

Nothing worked - in the end, I kept getting the same messages…

Dialed: *99# - The answering modem has disconnected. To check your connections settings and change them if needed, tap Settings.

Bluetooth Manager: The connection failed and could not be reestablished.

Finally, in “Details,” I get this: Green check by “Connection Established” and a red x by “Unable to establish connection. Please make sure the device is in range. Also verify that the requested service is available.

What’s the secret that finally got it to work?

At first, I thought the problem was with my Axim. So I tried to get online using my Powerbook and the same settings. When I had no luck with that, I started to do my homework. Every time our 6-month-old went down for a nap, I attacked the Internet searching for what I was doing wrong.

Well, when I finally managed to get my Powerbook online using BT and my V600, I knew I was getting close… (I’ll post more on how I did that later if you’re interested - it involved downloading a new modem script that did the work for me…)

But now, let’s get into how I made it work on my new X50v…

First off, I’m not going to go through the whole thing in gory detail because there are a lot of places online that can give you that information. Pairing the devices was easy, as was creating the Dial-Up Networking connection… What is not so obvious is that you have to insert one little extra line of code…

See that critical step 13? The one that suggests you enter a connection string? Well that’s the part I was missing all along… If you follow that tutorial step-by-step you’ll be fine as long as you use that connection string…

And what, you may ask, is that magical connection string for T-Mobile Internet? Here it is - enter exactly as you see it:

+CGDCONT=1,,”internet2.voicestream.com”

It works like a champ. And I’m the dork sitting here connecting and disconnecting to make sure it’s not a fluke.

Now if I could only figure out how to remotely post to my blog that way…
