Vista asks for drivers or just want to install new hardware
Here the same is true as for XP. Furthermore Vista seems to tend to loose the files USBSTOR.INF and USBSTOR.PNF from C:\Windows\INF. Probably there are more files missing then but the USBSTOR files are most frequently used ones.
There are copies of the files in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository - just copy them to C:\Windows\INF. Also look for disk.inf, disk.pnf, volume.inf and volume.pnf. All these are usually under subfolders of FileRepo.
